Learn how to make your own favorite Japanese styled teacups in the Weekend Masterclass October. We will practice throwing off the hump - up to 3 kg of clay on the wheel - and make a range of different cups in size and style, such as yunomi, chawan and handled cups.

We will prepare our own special clay blend made at the studio, to get the right quality, texture and preferred brown-black color for the course.

Although the course is focused on learning rather than making pieces, you will be able to keep 6 of the pieces you make

Day one, On our first day we're focussed on mastering throwing the cups off the hump and taking a deep dive into the magic of creating traditional Japan styled cups. We will use various throwing techniques, carve in the wet clay and applying texture into the claybody.

Day two, On our second day, we will be trimming, carving, adding handles to your pieces to make them ready for the first bisque firing.

Day three, during the third and last day of the course, you will learn how to glaze your pieces. You can choose from a wide selection of our different glazes, all made at the studio. If you're not able to attend the glazing evening, we can offer to do this for you from our preselected glazes. If you're not able to attend the glazing evening we can glaze your pieces in a single layered studio glaze.

Your finished pieces can be picked up at the studio within 1-2 weeks finishing the class.

Your booking can get refunded within 24 hours of purchase. After this period, your booking is binding, even if you miss one or more days of the course. If a class is cancelled by Reykjavik Clay, you will receive a voucher for a future course. It is not possible to switch course once booked. Please note that no refunds are given beyond the initial 24-hour window.

Before start of your ceramic course

Please arrive 10 minutes early as each session opens with foundational techniques that everything else builds on. It's hard to catch up if you've missed that groundwork, and disruptive to others once the class is underway.

An apron (synthetic is better than cotton, as it traps less clay dust). Shoes you don't mind getting earthy. A pen and paper for notes, as there's a lot to absorb in the early weeks. A small towel for drying your hands between steps. Clay, glazes, and equipment are all provided. A snack for own break.

Please carefully check all the class dates on the course to make sure that you are able to attend all your lessons. Unfortunately, it is not possible to reschedule any missed lessons or join lessons on another course. Our classes run at full capacity and on different lesson schedules.

You won't be the only one. Our instructors are used to working with complete beginners, and there's no performance involved. Just clay, time, and a room full of people in the same position as you. Long hair needs tying back, and long nails will make wheel-throwing noticeably harder.

Your pieces will be ready for pick-up 2-3 weeks after finishing your ceramic course. The instructor will send out a group mail when everything is ready for collection.
