This course is a one-week introduction to wheel throwing, where you will be making progress that would take you months of 3 hours-a-week practice. You'll walk away with a solid foundation in wheel throwing which will allow you to start throwing your own pieces from scratch.

During the course you will learn the basics of wheel throwing: wedging, centering, throwing cups, bowls and small vases, as well as trimming and glazing your pieces.

We will meet again after one week to glaze your chosen 6 pieces. If you’re not able to attend this session, we are offering you the opportunity to choose which 6 pieces you would like to be fired, glazed and shipped to you with an additional cost for shipping.

Teaching plan:

  • Monday: Our first day of throwing includes introduction to making a cylinder and bowls
  • Tuesday: Our second day of throwing, we continue from day 1 and will also get an introduction on making a vase or a closed form
  • Wednesday: Introduction to trimming. You will trim your pieces from day 1+2
  • Thursday: Making your own or guided project piece so it's ready for trimming the next day
  • Friday: Finalize all the pieces before bisque firing
  • Friday next week: Our last session for glazing your pieces with our studio glazes

Outcome

Although the course is focused on learning rather than making pieces, you will be able to keep 6 of the pieces you make.

  • We will meet again the following Friday where your pieces will be glazed with our studio standard high temperature glaze.
  • If you're unable to join us for the glazing time, we can glaze your pieces in a single layer studio glaze.
  • Additional shipping costs are charged separately. We’ll provide you with a shipping fee) once your pieces are ready for shipping.
  • We do not ship unglazed bisque pieces, as the chances of them breaking during shipping are too high

This course is right for you if:

  • You have been dreaming about making your own cup or bowl and in LOVE with ceramics.
  • You've tried other techniques but have never dared to try wheel-throwing.
  • You’re eager to get better at centering and pulling your clay up, but you've never given yourself a chance to really practice and learn.
